The MIT Enterprise Forum New Venture Clinics provide start-up companies an opportunity to obtain business advice in a low-risk, confidential environment.  For over 25 years the MIT Enterprise Forum of Texas (Houston) has organized and held New Venture Clinics in Houston to help start up companies to improve their business plan presentations, strategies, and marketing approaches, particularly as they are getting ready to pitch to investors.

The MIT Enterprise Forum of Texas is one of 27 worldwide non-profit chapters associated with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the Technology Review Magazine in Cambridge Massachusetts to promote Entrepreneurship and Technology. The Houston MITEF New Venture Clinics are conducted roughly once a month in Houston except during the summer. The participating Companies must have a unique technical product or technology and have a well thought out business plan and presentation.

Enerpol Presentation-Brian SmileyDuring the MITEF New Ventures Clinic, companies will give a 20 minute presentation of their business plan. There is then a question and answer period for 20 minutes followed by 20 minutes of comments from each one of the advisors. The presentation should cover subjects such as an introduction, description of the market, description of the product/value proposition, analysis of the competition, projections of sales and profitability, description of management team, issues for the business that the advisors can help with, and an exit strategy.

The advisors are senior business people from the Houston area. The purpose of  the clinic is to give companies experience in presenting their business plans to senior business people to tune their investor presentations, make connections, and to improve their business strategies. Companies such as

ATR (Smart Procedures), Ener Pol, Halsa Pharmaceutical, Orbital Traction, Wave Imaging Technologies, General Methanol, Soteica, Ecolyse, Recycle Match, Enerteck, Element 14, Arcos, Traxo, A-76 Technologies, Reecycle, and others have presented at the MITEF New Venture Clinics and found the feedback to be very good and very helpful.

MIT New Venture Clinic Advisor Cameron ByersAn example of some of the advisors are Doug Strahm (CEO Oakcrest Strategy Group), Richard Burgess (Vice President, Turner & Townsend), Art Saxby (Principal of Chief Outsider), Jim Gerberman (Managing Director of Corporate Finance Associates), Stephen Sims (President of General Methanol),  Deborah Mansfield (Director of HTC Life Science), Fran vonBerg (Law Partner, Farnsworth & vonBerg), Pat Green (Senior VP Investments, Wells Fargo), David McEwing (Principle Houston Patent Law), Jack Smyth ( VP Sales at CardioRisk Laboratories) , Serge Findling ( CEO & CIO Advisor), Ricky Holloman (CMO at Chief Outsiders) etc.

The cost for a company to present at the MIT New Venture Clinic is $150. In addition to the verbal feedback, the companies will also receive evaluation forms with comments from each of the advisers. For $25/person, one can also be an observer at one of the clinics.  University students can observe for $5/person. To be accepted to present at a MIT New Venture Clinic, a copy of business plan presentation must be reviewed and approved by the MITEF New Venture Committee to make sure it is suitable for presenting to the advisors. The clinics will be held on the first Tuesday of the month(Sept, Oct, Nov, Jan, Feb, Apr, May) at the Houston Technology Center (410 Pierce Street, Houston, TX).  Networking for each clinic starts at 5:15PM and the first presentation will be at 6PM (the second company will present at 7:25PM).
