Serious Gaming

May 19, 2010
5:15 PM - 8:30 PM

The Courtyard on St. James (near San Felipe @ Yorktown)
1885 St. James Place
Houston, TX

The learning process has not seen a fundamental change in hundreds of years, even as the world for which education is meant to prepare students has undergone major upheavals. Given the current trajectory, our national competitive standing will erode when compared to emerging economies if for no other reason than they can overwhelm us as a matter of scale.

The answer to our educational challenge lies, as it often does, in innovation. The technologies that have quickly arisen to make computer-based gaming the immersive experience that it is today are being applied to help make learning easier yet deeper.

Our panel will provide insight into how this transformation will come about by highlighting the serious games their companies are marketing today:
•   Phaedra Boinodiris, Serious Games Program Manager at IBM, will discuss INNOV8 - a series of games that teaches business process management.
•  Tony Elam, founder of the Houston Serious Games Research Consortium, will discuss OilSim, a game-based learning platform for the oil and gas industry.
•  And Melanie Lazarus, director of Marketing for Houston-based serious game developer Archimage and its online subsidiary Playnormous, will talk about how that environment fosters health education through casual video games.

Important advances in technology such as this demand the kind of illumination that only the MIT Enterprise Forum can deliver - we look forward to see you at this insightful presentation.
